creating healthy routines

Creating healthy routines can make a huge difference in your life. When you establish a routine, you create an environment of consistency. It helps create control over the day and gives you time for yourself. When you rush and don’t give yourself this space, your attitude and overall sense of well-being declines, your inner light dims, and your daily schedule begins to feel like a chore. Instead of creating each day from scratch, routines create a framework of small decisions you no longer have to make. This makes it easier to feel your best and ease your way into a healthier lifestyle.

MORNING ROUTINE

Creating a morning routine is one of the most important things you can do for your health and wellbeing. Think of it this way: the way you set your morning is the way you set the tone for the rest of your day.

Here are 5 easy things you can start to do for yourself this morning.

Set an Intention for the Day

While it’s key to get your body ready for the day, setting a positive mindset will also affect your energy and productivity. Visualize what you want to happen, write out your dreams and goals, or use positive affirmations that you repeat like a mantra.

Drink Warm Lemon Water

Drinking hot water with lemon in the mornings before you eat breakfast will have a positive impact on your health. The lemon in the water will not only stimulate your digestion to begin breaking down foods for the day, it will also help support your liver in the processes of breaking down and removing toxins from your body.

Meditate

10 minutes a day, that’s all you really need. Find a dimly-lit, quiet space and get comfortable. Fill your lungs with as much air as possible and breathe out slowly. The goal is to calm and relax the mind. If you find your mind wandering, play a guided meditation.

Before Your Morning Shower, Dry Brush Your Skin

Dry brushing is a simple wellness trick that takes 5 minutes out of your day. It’s gentle enough to move your lymph and stimulate your circulation to bring oxygen to your skin, your muscles, collagen, and gently massages your connective tissue to keep your skin looking tight and toned.

Find a Way to Move Your Body

Exercise increases mood, reduces stress and improves sleep. Because it is very energizing, it is best to exercise in the morning or afternoon. This can vary day by day and may be as simple as stretching, light yoga, rebounding, or taking the dog for a walk.

NIGHT TIME ROUTINE

In some ways, a bedtime routine is similar to a morning routine. You’re tending to your body and nurturing it, but for different reasons. In the morning, you want to give your body time to wake up naturally. At night, you need to relax and let your body wind down from a long day.

Here are 5 easy things you can do for yourself this evening.

Unplug

Turn your cell phone off at least an hour before bedtime. Trust me, I know this is a hard thing to do. It’s almost an automatic action to reach for your cell phone or iPad when boredom creeps in. Resist! During this hour, try not to look at any screens including the TV. Looking at cell phones, computers and TV screens stimulate brain activity and can make it harder to fall asleep.

Create a Bedroom Sanctuary

Whether you realize it or not, the environment in your bedroom has a huge impact on your health and longevity. Your body needs to recognize that your bedroom is a space for sleeping. You want it to be free of distracting technologies. Try switching your Wi-Fi off one hour before you head to bed. Ensure your bedroom is as dark as possible by using thick curtains and minimizing harsh lights or screen displays.

Take a Warm Bath

The ultimate way to relax before bed is to take a bath with calming essential oils. Some of my favorites include: rose, neroli, lavender, German chamomile, and jasmine. Sprinkle a few drops of your choosing into a cup of whole milk or a few tablespoons of olive oil. Add this diluted mixture to your bath water and stir to blend. If you add essential oils directly to hot water and they will evaporate quickly, along with their therapeutic benefits.

Write in a Journal

Keeping a journal is a practice that can help you process the day and make sense of your thoughts. Keep your journal on your bedside table and every night take a few minutes to review the day’s triumphs and write down what you’re grateful for that day.

What routines do you follow? I’d love to hear about them! Share in the comments below.
