Now is the time to become a Health Coach!
Health coaching—which includes coaching nutrition—is continuing to grow. The industry is a $7-billion-dollar industry in the United States and close to one $1 billion in Canada.[i][ii]
This is creating many opportunities for those who want to be at the forefront of change within the healthcare industry.
Increasingly, more and more individuals are seeking the services of certified Health Coaches to keep them on track. People are now recognizing the importance of making lasting changes to their health. This has led to continued growth and demand in the coaching industry.
There is no doubt that Health Coaching will continue to be an integral part of the future of healthcare. Clinicians and medical experts are recognizing how certain behaviors can affect disease progression. This is also true for a patient’s rate of recovery and healing time. In addition, most people (and their healthcare providers) realize that medication alone doesn’t solve all of their health issues. The need for ongoing guidance and support is in demand.
In conventional healthcare, physicians prescribe medications, and care is provided. However, many doctors lack the training in behavioral science as well as the time to work with their patients. This means that patients are left to make the necessary behavior changes on their own. Health Coaches are trained to help facilitate habit change. They provide the necessary support, helping their clients to understand the whys and hows to effectively change.
There are many certifications to choose from. Which one is right for you depends on many factors like time, other certifications that you already have, and the cost. However, a program should offer you up-to-date, science-based health information and coaching skillsets. This will ensure that you can guide clients effectively and safely to a healthier lifestyle.
Some programs focus on a particular area like nutrition. Others may offer a broad curriculum designed to cover several health-related concerns. It is important to do your research and find a program that fits with your philosophy and learning style. For example, if you’re interested in nutrition and whole-body wellness, the Natural Nutrition Coach certification is a great start.
Six Key Areas That Health Coaches Typically Help Their Clients Address Include

A recent study showed that “health coaching produces positive effects on patients’ physiological, behavioural, and psychological conditions and on their social life. In particular, statistically significant results revealed better weight management, increased physical activity, and improved physical and mental health status.”
